*2009's MOST DEPENDABLE CARS*
American buyers of new cars are the most demanding in the world, because it was mass production in the USA that first made ownership possible on a large scale, starting a global love affair with cars and the international auto-culture that we are all familiar with today.
Times and tastes and styles have changed a lot since the heady days of chrome plated, gas guzzling status symbols, and in the current world financial crisis Americans now lead the way with their demands for safety, reliability and fuel economy.

A recent survey of nearly 50,000 buyers of new cars in the midsize segment was based on problems they had experienced with cars purchased brand-new.
For several past surveys it was Japanese makes that dominated top rankings, indicating they had fewest problems and lowest maintenance costs from new.

The latest survey produced surprising results, with the #1 spot shared between Buick and Jaguar. This time the Top 10 was:
1= Buick
1= Jaguar
3. Lexus
4. Toyota
5. Mercury
6. Infiniti
7. Acura
8. Lincoln
9. Cadillac
10. Honda

Even more surprising than an American make (Buick) and an English make (Jaguar) overtaking Japan's Lexus and Toyota was the absence of any German makes in the Top 10.
No BMW, no Mercedes, no Audi, no Volkswagen. In fact there were no truly European cars at all in the Top 10, because although Jaguar originated and is still manufactured in England it is now owned by Tata Motors of India.

The survey reveals in marketing terms how important dependability is to buyers of new cars. If they experience few breakdowns and need replace few components, more than 40% of car owners will buy the same make next time. This level of brand loyalty is what all auto manufacturers constantly strive for.
